Okay, I was warned that the video was a bit narrow in its cast of characters. But it is true. The only woman portrayed is shown just dealing with the kids. Wow. Were any women encouraged or even allowed to significantly contribute to this "this changes everything" product? I guess it has not changed the look and feel of the teams that get to work on the choicest projects at Apple.

We did exactly what you're suggesting, holding the button down for several seconds, on more than one try. The stewardess had her own Blackberry and knew how they worked. This one would not turn off, for whatever reason. Very bad UX.

in future hold down the red button. the button that ends a phonecall. only....instead of holding down once for a short period..AKA pressing it..hold it down for several seconds..a far graver action causing the device to sleep...aka turn off. Note: the battery removal was just as easy yes. and when he turns the device back on all will be well. so no worries. Gotta say that it must suck to be on an airline and be treated like that tho. feel for the deaf guy. but the panic and anxiety has interrupted the value of the obvious off button.
mmmm marshmellows...I'm off have fun

Callie, I love this post. Of course, because I see everything through the lens of "consequential strangers," I can't help see this as a great example of both the good and bad kind. For Deaf Man, you and Tattletale were consequential strangers Tattletale caused his ordeal (and in the bargain was inconvenienced himself--poetic justice, I think), and your intervention helped him get through it. You and I have both written about how the design of a place matters in relationship development. Obviously, so does the design of a phone!

It was. That damn Blackberry would not turn off. Talk about a bad user experience. And not just for the phone user, either. For the 100+ other people on the plane, too.
